kate schelter5. What’s the ONE thing you absolutely can’t live without?

My family.

6. What is your biggest pet peeve?

People on their phones at the dinner table or social settings. It’s a modern phenomena when conversations become show and tell with photos—it’s unnecessary and interrupts perfectly wonderful conversations. If I’m talking with you, I don’t need to show you. I want to see your face and eyes.

7. If you could have dinner with anyone (living or not) who would it be, and WHY?

Terri Gross (from NPR Fresh Air) because she asks the best questions and has the best conversations. I listen to her shows while I paint and luckily feel like she’s sitting next to me in my studio.

8. What does it mean to you to have a strong, engaging brand and how has having one helped you?

My brand is a natural extension of me and everything I love to do, so I don’t really feel like it is “separate” from me. I feel like me. I always feel like I am learning and growing and working with people I love — or trying to. The more I am myself in my work, the better work I can do, the more proud of my collaborations I am — because I am attracting other people who love what they do, too.

9. What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

“It’s all happening; just be patient. You don’t know what you don’t know.”

10. What is one piece of advice you would give to women today about staying true to themselves and succeeding on their own terms?

Be Yourself. Everyone else is already taken.
