Women Leading the Conversation: Race and Friendship – It’s Not Black & White

Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we listen to Black women. For far too long, our society has been focused on White voices and Black women’s voices have gone unheard, even though historically, they have been the ones who have been using their voices the loudest to enact change (hello, 2018 mid-terms!)

Today it is necessary that we center Black women’s lives, stories, and calls to action. Which is why for the next interview in my Women Leading the Conversation series at AllBright on Wednesday June 24th, in partnership with Michael Stars, I will be talking to my good friend, Garcelle Beauvais.

Garcelle is a Haitian-American actress, author, reality television personality and model. Named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People, Garcelle is best known for her roles on The Jamie Foxx Show, NYPD Blue, Franklin & Bash and in films White House Down, Spider Man: Homecoming, Flight and Coming to America.

In 2020, Garcelle became the first Black cast member on the Bravo TV series, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. In between acting projects, she co-hosts shows like E’s Fashion Police and Access Hollywood Live on NBC.

She is also mother to three boys and the author of the “I AM” children’s book series, addressing identity issues relevant to many children today. She is a longtime supporter of and vocal advocate for Haiti and for women and girl’s rights. Garcelle volunteers regularly with the LA Mission, Angels for Humanity, and Step Up, a non-profit empowering teen girls to be confident and college-bound.

Garcelle and I will talk about our 15-year-long friendship, what it’s like being a Black woman in America today, navigating interracial relationships, and her take on current events and the Black Lives Matter movement.
