He has also been one of my greatest spiritual teachers over the last 25 years. His consistent message of self-actualization, self-reliance and personal responsibility has been one that I have carried with me and turn to again and again in challenging times.
In one of his last books, I Can See Clearly Now, he wrote, “If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any time. We are responsible for the way we feel, and have within us the capacity to change the way we view the events in our lives.”
Wayne always taught from a place of choice. We choose our thoughts, and in turn how we feel, and ultimately, the actions we take that determine our results.
He wrote, “Learn to rely upon yourself. Take total responsibility for everything that comes into your life, and as Dr. Viktor Frankl (Man’s Search for Meaning) has taught, you always have a choice in how you react to anything that life offers you.”
In honor of a great man and a true trailblazer for spiritual growth and the enrichment of the human race, here are some of his powerful words and inspiration:
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”
“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.”
“How people treat you is their karma. How you react is yours.”
“You are not stuck where you are unless you decide to be.”
“You cannot always control what goes on outside. But you can always control what goes on inside.”
“A mind at peace, a mind centered and not focused on harming others, is stronger than any physical force in the universe.”
“The essence of greatness is the ability to choose personal fulfillment in circumstances where others choose madness.”
“With everything that has happened to you, you can either feel sorry for yourself or treat what has happened as a gift. Everything is either an opportunity to grow, or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose.”
“Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice.”
“You create your thoughts, your thoughts create your intentions, and your intentions create your reality.”
“If you correct your mind, the rest of your life will fall into place.”
“Conflict cannot survive without your participation.”
“When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.”
“All blame is a waste of time. No matter how much fault you find with another, and regardless of how much you blame him, it will not change you. The only thing blame does is to keep the focus off you when you are looking for external reasons to explain your unhappiness or frustration. You may succeed in making another feel guilty about something by blaming him, but you won’t succeed in changing whatever it is about you that is making you unhappy. ”
“You won’t recognize your genius aspect if you’ve been conditioned to believe that you should accept your lot in life, think small, and not aim too high in order to avoid disappointment.”
“Peace can be a lense through which you see the world. Be it. Live it. Radiate it out. Peace is an inside job.”
