Today is Gloria Steinem’s 80th birthday.
We’d like to honor the woman who has worked tirelessly to amplify the voices of women across the global stage.
She is known around the world as a feminist, journalist, editor and social and political activist. She is best recognized as the leader of and spokeswoman for the women’s liberation movement in the late 1960’s and 1970’s.
A prominent writer and political figure, Steinem has founded many organizations and projects and has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including, most recently, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. She was a columnist for New York magazine and co-founded Ms. Magazine.
In 2004, she co-founded the Women’s Media Center, an organization that works to make women more visible and powerful in the media through advocacy, leadership training and original content creation. She continues to serve on the board of the organization.
Gloria has no plans to stop her career any time soon. She was quoted at the 2013 Women’s Media Awards saying, “What would I retire from? Life? I love this, I love what I do.”
She continues to travel extensively and involve herself in politics and media affairs as a commentator, writer, lecturer, and organizer, campaigning for candidates and reforms and publishing books and articles.
We honor Gloria today with a highlight reel of some of her most famous wise and witty quotes.
“Feminism has never been about betting a job for one woman. It’s about making life more fair for women everywhere. It’s not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It’s about baking a new pie.”
“If you say, I’m for equal pay, that’s a reform. But if you say, I’m a feminist, that’s a transformation of society.”
“Women may be the one group that grows more radical with age.”
“Some of us are becoming the men we wanted to marry.”
“A pedestal is as much a prison as any small, confined space.”
